Triple Glazed Sash Windows Not Commonly Used, Let Us Explain

We often receive enquiries from people looking for triple glazed sash windows. Naturally, people are looking for the beauty of a sliding sash window combined with optimum insulation value from modern glazing. Although anything is possible from a bespoke joinery workshop, there are two main reasons why they are not commonly used.

Firstly, recent improvements in the u-values and performance of double glazed units have made them almost as efficient as triple glazed units. This has been made possible with the introduction of ‘Low-E’ glass and gas filled cavities. By filling the glazing unit with gases such as ‘Argon’ and ‘Krypton’, the thermal efficiency of a window is greatly improved.

This is one reason why Kingsbridge’s sliding sash window can achieve an overall U-Value of 1.5. (more on Low U Value Windows)

Secondly, sliding sash windows are normally chosen for aesthetic reasons. Placing a triple glazed unit into a sash window can take from its slender appearance and make the window look bulky and commercial like.

As I said anything is possible, but when you can achieve such good performance from double glazing, and ensure an elegant looking window, there is little reason left to choose triple glazed sash windows.
